- Does Benin grant citizenship to Afro-descendants?
- Yes. Law 2024-31 of 2 September 2024, amended in July 2025, recognises Beninese nationality for any adult who establishes, through their genealogy, descent from a sub-Saharan African ancestor deported from the continent during the transatlantic slave trade. Applications are filed online on the government platform myafroorigins.bj. We handle no files: we house people, and we know the country.
- Do I need a visa for Benin?
- Yes, outside ECOWAS. Benin issues an electronic visa to apply for online before departure, with no embassy visit. A yellow-fever vaccination card is checked on arrival.
- Who are the Agudas?
- The descendants of freed people and families who returned from Brazil in the nineteenth century to the coast of Benin and Togo. They left verandah architecture, Portuguese family names and a recognisable cuisine, above all in Porto-Novo and Ouidah.
